Disney Genie+ has replaced the previous FastPass system at Walt Disney World.

With new technology comes lots of questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked Disney Genie+ questions I receive on Instagram!

If this this the very first post you’re reading on Disney Genie+, please go read this post first!!
It’s a really great overview of the system and covers how to use Disney Genie+, what rides are included, etc!

Disney Genie+ FAQ

Is Disney Genie+ free?

Disney Genie+ is NOT free. Disney Genie+ has a variable cost per day.

The lowest price you’ll pay for Disney Genie+ is $15 per person, per day at Walt Disney World.

The highest cost we’ve seen is $29 per person, per day.

The daily price will vary based on time of year — peak season and holidays will have the highest cost.

Do I have to purchase Disney Genie+ at each park I hop to in one day?

No. Your purchase of Disney Genie+ covers your entire day.

If you have a park hopper ticket you can hop as much as you’d like after 2pm and continue to use Disney Genie+ at the additional parks you visit.

How do I purchase Disney Genie+?

Disney Genie+ needs to be purchased on each day that you’d like to utilize the service.

You will purchase Disney Genie+ in the My Disney Experience app on your phone.

Open the My Disney Experience app and on the home screen, you’ll see a section to purchase Genie+ for the day (as well as what the price is for the service that day).

Is Disney Genie+ a new app I need to download?

No. Disney Genie+ is built into the existing My Disney Experience app.

It’s a good idea to make sure your My Disney Experience app is updated to the latest version before your vacation.

What is the return window for my Disney Genie+ selection?

You get a one hour return window for your Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selections.

Can one person in my party make all of the Disney Genie+ selections?

Yes they can. Just ensure everyone in your party is linked together in the My Disney Experience app.

How does Disney Genie+ work with Rider Switch?

Disney Genie+ works just as before with Rider Switch. Everyone in the party that plans to ride the attraction would need Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return windows in order to utilize Rider Switch.

You cannot cheat the system and only book Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return windows for the first group of riders and not the second. Cast members will verify that everyone in your group has a return window.

How many Disney Genie+ selections can I have at a time?

You can make one Disney Genie+ selection at a time.

⋆★ Important Note:

You can only make one Genie+ selection at a time.
However, you can still have more than one Genie+ return time at a time.
This is where the 120 minute rule comes into play.

When can I make my FIRST Disney Genie+ selection of the day?

You can make your first Disney Genie+ selection as early as 7:00 am — regardless of park opening time.

This 7:00 am selection time is for BOTH on-site resort guests and off-site guests.

When can I make additional Disney Genie+ selections?

You can make an additional Disney Genie+ selection AFTER you have scanned into your first Disney Genie+ selection OR after 120 minutes have passed since making your original selection.

⋆★ Important Note:

The 120 minute clock does not start until the park you’re visiting has officially opened.

For example: if at 11:02 am you make a Disney Genie+ selection for Slinky Dog Dash but the return window isn’t until 6:00-7:00 pm that evening, you would be able to make your next Genie+ selection at 1:02 pm (120 minutes after 11:02 am).

In this instance, you would have more than one Genie+ return time in your My Disney Experience app.

Does my child under three need Disney Genie+?

No. Only ticketed guests need to have Disney Genie+ return windows in order to skip the standby lines.

Guests under 3 would just accompany their party.

I don’t want to use technology on vacation, can I still utilize Disney Genie+?

With the introduction of Disney Genie & Disney Genie+ PLUS the push for mobile ordering I highly recommend at least someone in your party is comfortable with using their phone during your vacation.

You cannot utilize Disney Genie+ without a device that has the My Disney Experience app.

Could you get by without a phone at the parks? Sure. But you’ll spend a lot more time waiting in lines without having quick access to wait times, ride closures, restaurant availability, etc.

Do Annual Passholders or Resort Guests get a discount on Disney Genie+?

No. There aren’t any discounts on Genie+ at Walt Disney World.

Can a Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction sell out?

Yes they absolutely can — and do.

* ˚✦ Pro Tip:

I highly recommend you prioritize grabbing Genie+ return windows for the most popular rides at each park first.
I have a post that covers which rides to select first at each park, right here.

Do I get to select my Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return window?

No, you don’t. The app will display to you the next available window.

You cannot filter through to choose a different time.

As the day goes, the available selection windows will continue to change until they eventually run out.

Can I scan into the Disney Genie+ Lightning Lanes with my phone or watch?

Yes, you can if you create a Disney MagicMobile digital pass. You can read how to do that on the Walt Disney World website right here.

Can you modify a Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return window?

Yes you can.

You can modify a current selection to a different available time or to a different available attraction.

Remember you still will not be able to select the exact return window. You will need to select whatever return window is available to you while modifying.

Can you use Disney Genie+ multiple times on the same ride?

No you cannot. The app will only allow you to select that attraction once.

If something is a favorite for you and you’d like to ride twice, I suggest you hit that attraction early in the day with low waits via the Standby Line and save your Disney Genie+ return window for later in the day.

Can I book my Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return windows before my trip like FastPass+ in the past?

No, you can’t. Everything is same day with Disney Genie+.

Will my phone battery be able to last the entire day while using Disney Genie+?

From my experience, using your phone at the parks to snap photos, make Disney Genie+ selections, check park maps and wait times, etc will drain your battery.

I recommend you bring a portable charger with you.

  1. I followed your genie+ day to see how it differed from my last Disney trip and can say it is 100% worth it. I rope dropped at 8am and left the park at 11pm and only managed to get 17 attractions in.

  2. Hi Shannon!! Following along yesterday was so fun!
So, this seems super similar (but high tech now) to how the fastpasses used to be circa 2004 at wdw. Love that you don’t have to book all your fastpasses ahead of time. I’m excited to try this on our next trip. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I am so glad this came out now! We are heading to WDW next week and I was nervous to use the new Genie+. Thanks for laying it all out in an easy to understand way! Sending this post to all the people in my party to get ready to go!

  4. Hi!! Obsessed with your account and we’re besties, don’t make it awkward! 😂 my question is, did they do away with DAS pass now that they’ve introduced genie+?
    Thanks!!!!

  5. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! I know it’s your job, but with all the health issues you’ve dealt with, you’re a champ!! I’ll admit, it still seems overwhelming…I know it’s a VERY unpopular opinion, but a part of me wishes they’d just go old school and have everyone wait in standby lines again. I think I’m going to have to have to hold off until my littlest ones are older before we try to tackle wdw again with all the new changes! I’ll definitely be following you along and taking notes!!

  6. Your stories Tuesday were really helpful! I love that this is doesn’t require waking up early to book Fastpasses so far out but it’s so expensive for a family!

  7. Hello Shannon, sorry I don’t think you mentioned this, but is it possible to book a genie + attraction and a lightning one at the same time? I know you can’t book Teo attraction until you have entered one or 120 mins have passed. But is it possible with the rides that are individual cost? Thanks!

    • Hi Maria! Great question! You definitely can hold an Individual Lightning Lane attraction and a Genie+ selection at the same time. 🙂

  8. I’m wondering if you can utilize the extra LL purchase attractions (such as Mine train) through just Genie +, or if you can only go through the LL on these attractions with the extra add on purchase of the individual ride?

    Thank you SO Much!

  9. Thanks so much for taking the time to take us through your day yesterday and for writing this up! I thoroughly enjoyed following along yesterday- it was the bright spot in my day! Genie+ seems interesting but MaxPass was so much better because it had so many ride options and you could choose the same rides over and over if you wanted.

  10. hi, don’t know if you can answer this question or not. we are going to disney in a couple weeks and have park hopper tickets. we are not staying at a resort so i know we can’t make our paid LL+ until the park opens. Can I make both at the same time at park opening? Can I choose the time for those $$? for instance if I want one to be in the 2nd park or do i have to wait until after 2 to make the 2nd LL+ selection?
